Literacy Homework - Victorian Schools

On Monday, you met Mr Wilberforce and experienced a day in a Victorian school room.

What do you think it would have been like to go to school in Victorian times?  Think about what children learned and how, what the punishments were like and how it might have felt.

You can look at the below images and website if you want to find out more.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/primaryhistory/victorian_britain/victorian_schools/

YOUR TASK
Imagine that you are a Victorian school child then write a recount of your day.
You could plan it using a skeleton (see last week’s blog post for help and think about the one you did yesterday).Remember to ‘think it’ and ‘say it’ before you write!

I look forward to seeing your blog post before Wednesday 30th October!

I have been super impressed with your comments thus far, but remember to offer support to one another as well, by suggesting a wish.

    Dear Diary,

Today wasn't as good as I thought it would be.Me and my big brother were late to school because yesterday brother just stole 100 genies from a rich man and we spent all night eating stuff so we had to were the dunser's hat oh it was horrible.

When it was arithmetic the teacher said that we're going to have a test to see if we learn't are homework if not we'll all have the cane. I struggled a lot because I didn't learn my homework then when the teacher checked it he look liked a huge bomb that was about to explode it was brutal. After everybody got the cane they left for recess everybody looked at me and walked away.

At lunchtime we could only have carrots and peas.My best friend Adella and I got to play hunt the ring. When we entered the classroom we noticed that the caretaker was replacing our windows. It was so noisy I couldn't even hear a word all I could hear was BANG BANG BANG and I can still hear it in my head, the teacher said we had to go to the spear classroom. We including the teacher hated the spear classroom it was dampest, dirtiest and darkest classroom in the school.

When me and brother got home I laded down and took a nap that hoping tomorrow would be a good day.

  2. I was going to my school which was very boring because they were very strict and they lots of bad punishments like hit you with the cane or if youy were fiddling with your fingers they would give you a finger stopper.I was talking to one of my friend when we were in the line, the teacher saw and she told me off but she didnt have the cane.We went inside but the teacher forgot my punishment I said few because the cane pains a lot because I got it once.First we were doing handwriting and Idid my handwriting so good that I got to do the big book, when I had finished I needed the toilet extremely that I put my hand up and shouted miss may I go to the toilet, she let me go but I knew she would hit me with the cane. When I came out of the toilet I said thank you but she said no appreciating with anyone but next time go to the toilet at lunch understand me,obviously I had to say yes miss.Ater we had to do Ariithimetics which was usally for the boys even the girls did it but different stuff. It was very hard but I still did ,I got everything write but the others werent very lucky because I got to go to lunch first which meant I had 1 hour and 30 mins.I was gonna have packlunch today so I was going to go in lunch but my friends were kept in in for lunch then I went to eat.Today I had a sandwich, banana and some very yucky yogurt,I had to eat evrything si went outside but it started to rain.So everybody had to do there exept me because my morning had gone well but I needed to go to the and talking to my friend.I got to play with the nice games they had then lunch was over,so we had to finish our posters we were doing for the charity. It took the whole class the afternoon but I got to go a bit early, when I was going home I was thinking about my lovely and a bit bad day.

  3. Dear Diary,
Today it was my first day at school. We were just going in to the classroom and we had to stand up when the teacher came in and say 'good morning sir'. Then we had to write on slate because they didn't have pens or paper at that time. We had to write 'children should be seen and not heard' then we had to say our times tables. If we went wrong the teacher made us wear the dunces hat and sit in the corner. this made me very scared as the teacher shouted a lot. When i got home I said 'I had a horrible first day at school' to my Mum.

Take my advice you do not want to be a poor victorian child in Victorian times trust me it is absolutely devastating let me tell you. When I woke up I was very nervous about today, because it was Friday and Fridays are always bad for me.It is a bad day because I have to go to work and miss school. When I went down stairs I didn't have any breakfast. When the person who collects me came, they only gave my parents 2 farthings. When I started work the person who makes me work, makes me work very hard and said if you work hard he would give me more food, but he didn't give me any! When I was having a rest I was thinking what my teacher would say about missing school. I hate this job, I have a lot of jobs but I hate this one the most.

When I went home I was absolutely starving. So finally I had some food but only a little bit. After I had dinner my 6 brothers just came home. They keep on saying their lives are so good I think it is because they earn a lot of money but personally I think their lives are as boring as my life. I am the youngest menber of my family, I am only six years old and I am forced to work. My house is tiny so our family is bunched up together so it is very hot almost unbearable.

When I went to sleep I was thinking how nice it would be and what a wonderful experience it would be to have a lot of money just for one day. But all I need is a house and lots of food. Today was a terrible day I hope tommorow will be a better day or mirracle will happen and we will be rich. When I went to sleep I was looking back in time and how i became poor, and also thinking about school and how fun it would be. My favourite subject is arithmetic bacause I am good at it. Next I was tired so I went to sleep with a sad face.

  5. Dear Diary,

Today I was running late for school because I had to help Mother with the dishes, when I arrived at school my teacher hit me with the cane and threaten to hurt me twice as much tomorrow if I was late again. We had Drill first lesson and I had forgotten my kit therefore my teacher punished me by making me wear a dunces cap and I had to stand in the corner until the lesson was finished, I felt so upset and embarrassed that I went bright red in the face and I had to take a trip to the ladies bathroom, I put my hand up for Miss to let me go but she did not let me go and just made me write 'Schooldays are the happiest days of my life' 100 times instead, i felt very fed up by then.

After that, we had reading and writing, reading and writing are my favorite lessons because I am very good at them, teacher was impressed with my answers and said to me well done, I felt very happy with what teacher said to me. I couldn't wait to go home and tell mother.

  7. Dear Diary,
I got ready for school in my Victorian apron and then we walked to school. We came in our Victorian class and stood behind our chair in a easy way. The teacher told us to sit down. Our names were called from the register but when we said good morning we stood up and then sat down again. As a task we took a dictionary and placed it on our heads to improve our posture and this was done in the Victorian times. Sabrina,Lewis,Annabella won the balancing the book task. Finally we done some arithmetic's, spelling and hand writing. It was then lunch time. After lunch we wrote a story then we went to assembly about Victorian times and then it was time to go home. Computers were not used in Victorian times.

  8. Dear Diary,

Today was the worst day ever, when I woke up I couldn't wait to go to school because it was my fi I went down to eat breakfast with my 20 siblings. I was the youngest member of my family, but I hated being the youngest because I was always the last one for breakfast because no one would pass it to me and sometimes there was nothing left and I had to do all the chores.

When I arrived at school I saw one of my friends from work and she was in my class I went to talk to her but she didn't reply but the teacher saw me and he had the cane with him and he hit me really hard on the bottom 10 times it really really hurt.

When we got into classroom the teacher introduced me to the class asked my friend to look after me so I went and sat next to her then she smiled at me brightly and the teacher told me his name was Mr Wilberforce. The first lesson was posture ( where we had to balance a book on our heads) as soon as we started, a boy named Charlie got punished because he was walking around the classroom so Mr Wilberforce so he trapped Charlie in a cage and sent him up to the ceiling. I was the last one standing with the book on my head.

The next lesson was handwriting Mr Wilberforce said the letters were messed up so we had to write them down in alphabetical order but I wasn't listening so I just wrote it down it the wrong order from the board when Mr Wilberforce was marking my book he saw I did it wrong so I had to wear the duncesess hat.

The next lesson was spellings we all had to say the word together, there were words like warm, metaphor, book and lots more. The first word was metaphor we had to say “M, E, T, A, P, H , O, R” I couldn’t see the word because Mr Wilberforce’s head was in the way he caught me because I wasn’t spelling the word and asked me to spell the word without looking so I said “M, E, T, A, F, O, R, E” “INCORRECT!” said Mr Wilberforce “GO AND STAND IN THE CORNER” so I went and stood in the corner.

Next was arithmetic, I hated arithmetic a lot because it was really hard the question was 55+45 I counted on my fingers but as soon as I put my hand up Mr Wilberforce caught me and he made me wear the finger stopper after a few minutes I felt sick and vomited so I had to go home I was glad to go home because it was the worst day ever. When I said I couldn't wait to go school, now I don’t agree because I think school is the worst place ever and I think you’ll agree as well.

  9. Dear Diary,

Today was the boing day at school. All we did is copy from the black board.Thats why I like spelling test but today and we didn't do spelling.

I'm very good at arithmetic now.Yesterday it was fine my arithmetic but today I was better. I'm even good at spelling from yesterday or I would of been more if we had spelling today. I really like handwriting my handwriting is very neat and tidy. I like the way L is written and O but I really like handwriting.

I really like lunch time but I don't like the bit that we have one hour I always wish to have more but it never works.I like to sit with my two best friends. They are very kind to me. The hole class is nice and polite to each other and we all listen and respect the teacher because it's good to respect and we would not like to wear the dunser's hat or the cane witch will hurt.

This morning I got up early because I had school and school starts very early. I made sure I washed properly and my uniform was clean because I got the cane last week as punishment for coming to school with dirty hands.
My school is seven miles away and I walk there and back.
I hope I can work very hard so I get to be the slate monitor next time.
When I got there thankfully my nails and hands were not dirty so I did not get the cane.
Next we had to do our arithmetic this involved reciting our tables out loud. Today was a boring day I hoped that tomorrow is a better day.

  11. Dear diary

Believe it or not today turned out to be a very special day for me. Before I tell why it was special first I am going to talk about my cool day at school.

I arrived late for school today because I was late finishing my breakfast. Even though I was just a few minutes late my teacher punished me by canning on my right hand. Everyone in my class tried to resist from laughing but couldn’t. All those who laughed the loudest were stood up in front of the class and received the cane on their hands. I felt pain for only the first five minutes and was fine afterwards.

My best friend Tom had brought his pet mouse called Jimmy to school. When the teacher was busy writing on the board I quietly crept up to the desk and put Jimmy in Mr John’s coat. The bell for lunch rang and everyone got up to go outside. Mr John put on his coat and Jimmy the mouse climbed up on to Mr John’s head. Mr John panicked and started screaming. He does not like mice. All the children were in stitches with laughter.

After lunch we had handwriting lesson. My normal teacher was off sick so my mum who works as part time substitute teacher was asked to help out. My mum wasn’t strict with me but shouted at some boys who were messing around. It was a fun lesson for me.

Finally the bit about why this day was special. When I was walking home I saw something shimmering in the bushes. I went to see what it was. Wow it was several gold coins in a bag. What shall I do? I was confused. I took them home and showed them to my mum. Although we could have bought lots of things my mum told me take them to the police. She came with me to the police station and they gave me a reward of one gold coin that was worth £20 for my honesty.

I gave the money to my mum who used it towards buying a new house.

  12. Dear Diary,

I am fed up of being a goodie two shoes.
Today was different. When Miss Pot
    asked me what5x10 was I replied "1
Miss," even though I knew it was 50.
"Try again Emily she said encourage-
    ingly."
This was not the reaction I was hoping
    for.

"Mmmmmmm....., try 4x3." For a moment
or two I gazed blankly at the black slate
board, before answering, "25 Miss." This
was surely more than she could handle,
as a result she shouted "do you want to
go in the cage young lady, if not I suggest
    you answer correctly.

During morning break, Ruby Smith, the
prettiest girl in the class, came up to me
and remarked "so little goodie two shoes
has decided to change her ways? You ha-
ve really bad timing snot face you know why?
Because I heard Miss Pot was going to give
you the special toy, but I guess not, buy. Oh
no I have waited al year for the special toy,
and Miss Pot will never forgive me. Ruby was
right I really do have bad timing.

    When came back from break
Ruby claimed I had called her
snot face, even though I didn't,
I got 10 of my first lashes of the
cane on my thy it felt like a knife
had cut though an inch of my
skin. During the rest of the day
was on my best behaviour again,
but I doubted it was enough. As we were packing
our things for home time, Miss Pot announced that
Tim McDonald would get the special toy tomorrow
first break. I was burning with envy all the way home,
and I inspected I will be tomorrow.

    Yours truly Emily Hoploch

Today was the best day I’ve had because I see my classmates. When we got inside the class room we all had to say“good morning sir”. Then we did handwriting on some slate and used chalk. The words we wrote were queen, carriage, school, pair and towel. After that we did arithmetic which is the Victorian way of saying mathematics. My arithmetic lesson was about money. It was challenging but I managed to get it done. After we played three games called find the ring, hoola hoops and skipping ropes. At lunchtime we had a few boiled vegetables and water. We had 1 hour and Forty minutes. When we went home I told my mum that I had a wonderful time at school.

Today was a horrible day. We had to do really hard times tables. We also marched around the playground in the freezing cold .If you tripped over or fell you would get the cane on your palms. If you got one mistake in your timetables you would wear the dunce's hat in the corner. Today it happened to three people. Jane was writing with her left hand so she got shouted at and was told to write with her right hand. Jack was disrespectful to the teacher and had to write "school days are the happiest days of my life" hundred times. Joseph had a bad cough .He coughed in the middle of the session so the teachers dipped a spider in butter and then he had to swallow it. THE END

I had the most terrible day because the headmaster made me aware that if I ran in to the wall I would be made to wear the
    dunce's hat.
Iam very good at arthimatic and drill.I know some one who had a whooping cough and ate a spider dipped in butter on toast .
It was horrible, everyone gathered around Josie to see her eat it.Then we did handwriting and it was amazing. We had a teacher named Mr.Wilbur Force ,he was the kindest teacher we ever met.The End.

It all stared in1902, it was a boring day. We did our maths and then we did our timetable out loud so that the hash and streaked teacher and after that we went outside in the cold wether and marched around the wet playground for 40 laps. One of my classmates asked to go to the toilet during our lessons then the teacher got the cane and screamed aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah, he was crying his tears out. Then a lovely teacher slowly walked inside the classroom and said is everything ok. The teacher heard some one have a bad cough the teacher said get a spider and put in butter and then swallow it,it will make you better.

  18. OUCH! That still hurts, I couldn’t finish my work in time that’s why I got punished by the obnoxious, terrifying teacher Mrs Peter she`s so awful I hate her and the classroom stinks of a rotten fish! Yuk! And I don’t want to copy of the chalk board every lesson it is so boring. I’ve not even got any friends in my class because they see that I get punished, they always laugh at me.

Today I had a day like every other because I had to work for 7 hours like always in a filthy factory and then l saw the same old chimney sweep getting a child who was( under the age of 8 )getting in the chimney and got stuck then some one set a fire and then the child sadly died like every other child and then I went sleep.
